“My Kids Hope”

by Kids Hope USA Mentor, Jody Massey

I have been a Kids Hope USA volunteer for the last 5 years and it has been wonderful! My mentee Arleen has now graduated to the 6th grade.  It is bittersweet for our time to together to end… as you will see in our picture at her graduation, she was really sad that our time together was ending… I was too, but I could smile because I love her so very much!

I met Arleen when she was in the 1st grade. She grabbed my hand and said, “let’s go, Miss Joey.”  Arleen would introduce me to everyone we would see in the halls as “Her Kids Hope.”  She was so proud to have a mentor! It was just so special to see that she never felt “different” that she was in the Kids Hope program. She felt special and loved!

I have loved our time together and watching her grow up and mature!  She may never know the blessing she was to me. God actually used her to save me!

6 years ago my oldest son started using drugs and it turned our world upside down. As parents, we were living our worst nightmare and after a year of this chaos I prayed for God to help me get through each day and use me somehow.

Having a purpose each day is such a big deal when you are suffering.  God slowly started filling up my time with amazing things and Arleen was at the top of that list! Seeing Arleen each week kept me going and made me focus only on her! I am so very thankful for this time with her and it wouldn’t have been possible without Kids Hope USA! Year by year, she grew up and my faith grew stronger… so, in different ways, we grew up together!
